Kohlrabi Planting

Kohlrabi Planting

Brassica oleracea

Cultivation

We plant it among the other plants. We can sow it directly on the final site, but most of the time, we grow it from seedlings. We sow a few plants several times at a time. It becomes successfully when the temperature exceeds 10 ° C and the night temperature is 5 ° C.

Distances

Between the rows 30 cm, between the plants in a row at least 20 cm, we can also plant it among the other plants with which it gets along.

Position

With sunny skies.

Quantity

About ten plants per person.

Date of sowing

For semicolons February-mid-August. It sprouts for ten days.

Composting

With home compote. We grow on the second parcel. We are careful about the lack of boron. It needs less fertilization if we build it among beans or peas.

Watering

It is sensitive to the lack of water, so we water it regularly up to 20 cm deep.

Good neighbors

legumes, lettuce, beetroot, cucumbers, celery, onion, comfrey, potato, chard, pepper, radish, asparagus, mint, thyme, chamomile, cumin

Bad neighbors

tomato

Diseases and pests

It is not particularly sensitive. In case of attacks, we behave as for the cabbage.

Collection

We collect the bulbs when they are about 5 cm in size, even before in summer. Later they lignify. We keep the lamps in the fridge in plastic bags for up to three weeks. In wet and cold cellars, they last up to three months.

Supply

We consume the young stem, not yet lignified and the leaves (such as juice, spinach, or indifferent dishes). It contains most of the vitamins and minerals.

Important

It does not tolerate acid soil. If the plant does not have enough moisture, the bulbs will crack.

Special features

We know white (green) and red kohlrabi. Reds are less sensitive and contain a little more useful substances.
